Winter warmth // Menu for Saturday, December 02, 2017

Can you believe it's already December? We've only got a few more Saturday markets before our winter break. We'll be down at the market tomorrow, December 2, and the following week is our last one! 

I repeat: December 9 will be our last market of the season at Steamboat Landing!

We'll miss you all, and we'll be back down at the market sometime in April. In the meantime, we have a great menu planned for tomorrow. We'll be serving a delicious buckwheat polenta with a rich, savory mushroom sauce, as well as lentils du Puy, roasted kohlrabi, and some tender little squash tartlets. 

Buckwheat is a wonderful winter food, imparting a deep warmth you can feel in your bones. Perfect for blustery days.

Okay, folks, time to dig out those warm winter wools, those sweaters and vests and hats and gloves, those mittens and scarves and thick socks, those windbreakers and parkas and raincoats! Time to stock up on hot chocolate mix and herbal teas, fill the woodbox with firewood, and make sure you know where your windshield scraper is! Almost time to hunker down and stay cozy -- but before you do, put on all those warm bundling layers and come meet us down at the Ithaca Farmers Market tomorrow. It's likely to be chilly all day, but we'll be there with a fabulously warming meal to nourish and delight you, as well as some tasty vegan desserts. This week we've included a little spice in the meal -- a slow-cooked three-day pumpkin mole and a touch of pasilla, sweet smoked peppers from New Mexico. We're also taking care of your lungs with lotus root. And the cabbage this time of year is so fabulously sweet and crisp we can hardly believe it.

On the dessert menu, we're still celebrating a great year for paw paws, and we've brought back the paw paw cheesecake for an encore. We've also gotten some beautiful fresh figs from a local producer,  and of course we've got a couple of seasonally-appropriate pumpkin offerings as well.

Menu for Saturday, October 28, 2017 // and a note about Tuesdays

The sleepy season has begun! Yesterday we paused to marvel at the heavy, steely grey clouds filling the sky, tinged with bright midday sunlight. "That's November rolling in," Peggy remarked. "November skies." It's true -- at home, we've lit the wood stove more than once, and it's a race to get the garden cleaned up before winter really sets in.

With November skies ahead, and the tender fruits all harvested, we're looking forward to a little hibernation, as well as the sweeter, richer, nourishing foods we associate with autumn. Sweet winter squash, pungent spices, the crisp autumn broccoli and other cabbage siblings -- we want it all! 

Here at the warehouse we have some big improvement projects this winter, and we're anxious to be prepared for the changes that are coming. Thus, sadly, we will not be at the Tuesday Farmers Market This Coming Week. We're sorry to miss you for the third week in a row, and we look forward to next year...but there is much to be done on the home front and we are hard at work here.

That means we are finished with Tuesday Markets for the season! Next week is the final week before Tuesdays shut down until the spring. So, Tuesday friends -- we'll see you next year!

As for Saturday markets, we will continue attending the market at Steamboat Landing until mid-December, weather permitting.

As always, it is a pleasure to cook for you. We'll see you tomorrow, in the autumn chill!
