July is the season when everything gets messy. Ripe strawberries leave their stain, fresh sour cherries color our fingertips red, and in our gardens the stately pea vines are beginning to buckle under the weight of their own fruit. Not to mention the weeds, which seem to double in size each humid day and with each torrential downpour... July is what the Youth might call a "hot mess". You're too hot, and everything is a mess.
For those of us who love order and tidiness, neat rows and organized columns, July offers a chance to let go and embrace a little chaos. Chaos is fertile. Without the sprawl of those pea vines, we wouldn't get snap peas; without the stain of those sour cherries, we wouldn't get to eat our cherry pie.
This week we celebrate that. The mess, the chaos, and the fertility. Fresh sour cherries from 202 Madison, shiitake mushrooms from Cayuta Sun Farm, greens from Remembrance Farm and Wild Apple, and countless goodies from Blue Heron, Muddy Fingers, Stick & Stone Farm, Plowbreak, and the many other farmers who nourish us, and allow us to nourish you. And of course, thanks to you, for the privilege of feeding you.
Rice and Beanly Yours,
The Macro Mamas
